What textbook will we use?

What other materials will I need?

Students will need to bring to class everyday:

  1. pencil/pen
  2. a three section notebook
  3. a three ring binder with dividers (optional but recommended)

What will I learn in this class?

  1. READING

Students read a variety of grade level materials, applying strategies appropriately to various situations

  1. WRITING

Students write for a variety of purposes and audiences with sophistication and complexity appropriate to the grade level

  1. LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Students listen for a variety of purposes appropriate to the grade level

Students speak for a variety of purposes appropriate to the grade level

How will I learn these concepts?

Instruction will be a combination of the following: lecture, reading, discussions, written and oral assignments, small and large group activities, self-paced assignments, and student sharing. Students will be expected to learn and apply these skills both in and out of the classroom.

What important dates do I need to know that relate to this class?

Students will receive an activity calendar that lists all school functions as well as school guidelines and rules.  I will notify each student of any due dates for all projects and assignments.

How do I pass this class?

Based on the action of Park County School District #1 Board of Trustees on March 1st, 2002, the following grading scale will be used:

93-100                A

85-92                    B

77-84                    C

70-76                    D

0-69                       F

In addition to passing grades, students must also meet the standard requirements in five of the nine areas in order to graduate.  (This is the BOE’s!!!)

How will my work be evaluated?

Students’ grades are based upon standard assessments and assigned work.  Standard assessments, daily work, participation, and homework assignments will be calculated as 100% of the students’ grade.

How will I be evaluated for the class?

Prior to completing a standard assessment, a student must have completed 70% of assignments before he/she will be allowed to complete each standard.  Students will also be evaluated by work ethic, attitude, and class participation.

What about late work?

Late work will not be accepted unless discussed previously with me.  Students must have 70% of assignments complete before taking each standard assessment.

Students will be given an opportunity for remediation of any skill necessary to enhance the skill required to complete a standard assessment.  Students will have one full day upon returning to school to set up a remediation appointment with me.  Students must schedule the appointment before, during, or after school.  Failure to do so on the students’ part will result in a zero for that specific skill.

What other information do I need to know?

Students need to adhere to all class rules set up for the safety and general welfare of all students.  Students are allowed up to 10 absences and need to be aware that on the 11th absences, loss of credit for the class will become a factor.  Students need to be on time for class and prepared.  Students who are late will be disciplined accordingly.

Classroom Expulsion Rule

The first time that a student is sent from the classroom to the Principal’s Office for discipline, the expulsion rules are explained.  The student will remain out of the classroom for the remainder of the period, and be given an absence.  The student will develop and write a behavior plan of action to get back in class and remain successful.

The second time a student is sent from the classroom for discipline he or she will be removed from the class for the remainder of the semester, with a letter grade of “F,” loss of credit, and will be placed in a restricted study hall until the end of the semester.  I will notify parents each time the student is sent to the office.

Plagiarism:

Plagiarism is defined as presenting the ideas or words of another as one’s own. This has become a large concern for the Powell High School English Department.  Students who choose to plagiarize will receive a ZERO for the task at hand.  There will be no opportunity to make up the task.  Students are not allowed to use the work of classmates nor anyone else without proper documentation.

Disabilities Statement:

If you are a student with a disability or believe you may be dealing with a disability, please contact Mr. Wray.  Your disclosure will remain confidential.

Syllabus needs to be signed and returned by Wednesday.  It will be worth 20 points.

I have read the syllabus and understand the expectations of Powell High School and Mr. Brimhall’s English class.  I also understand that I will be receiving a full list of classroom rules in the near future.
